Health and Safety Manager

The Health & Safety (H&S) Manager is responsible for managing and directing health & safety risk management operations at the company. Responsible to maintain, upgrade (as necessary) and administer August Mack’s internal Corporate Health and Safety Program.

Includes the opportunity to learn and manage liability insurance and contracting. Work with August Mack brokers and providers in securing, maintaining, and administering the necessary liability and workman’s compensation insurance. Review contracts and ensure the appropriate contract terms and conditions are included in August Mack agreements with customers and suppliers.

This position reports directly to the Principal of Talent Management and works with project team members and subcontractors to implement the August Mack safety program in the field and work with service providers (brokers, agents, carriers, and outsider attorneys) to ensure August Mack has adequate insurance and contractual protection for its projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

AUGUST MACK HEALTH & SAFETY PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the review and approval of site Health & Safety Plans (HASPs) for all AME offices.
  • Perform and review job hazard analyses and attend Project Kick-off meeting with the project team to review hazards, PPE, and controls for projects.
  • Conduct routine job-site safety inspections at all AME offices in order to identify potentially hazardous conditions. Take corrective action and/or make recommendations as necessary; prepare written reports on findings.
  • Develop, conduct, and/or coordinate refresher Health & Safety training for all AME offices and all other safety-related training as needed.
  • Perform safety accident investigations and coordinate loss prevention activities. Determine validity of industrial injury claims and review correctness of information.
  • Verify employee’s “fit to work” status (all required physicals, respiratory fit testing, ability to work with hazardous waste materials assessment, etc.).
  • Maintain OSHA logs and post according to standards.
  • Oversee and implement company DOT program.
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute the company Health and Safety Plan and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Manual for all employees on an ongoing basis, according to changing regulations.
  • Serve as a resource and counsel employees and management regarding assigned areas of responsibility and make recommendations for solutions to safety problems.
  • Interpret safety-related rules, regulations, and procedures for management and employees.

RISK MANAGEMENT (opportunity to learn and manage)

  • Prepare and administer all contracts.
  • Procure and administer liability insurance.
  • Manage all claims.
  • Work with outside legal counsel.
  • Support technical and operations staff in assessing and mitigating project risk.
  • Implement and improve vendor approval programs.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Requires 3 years of industrial health and safety experience, ideally in EH&S consulting; experience in accident prevention or loss control programs including comprehensive safety and employee occupational health and training safety programs; and a bachelor’s degree in safety management, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field. Experience in contract review is a plus. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Additional Requirements:

This classification requires the use of a personal or company vehicle on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license, and have an acceptable driving record.

This classification requires 25% travel to various AME offices and client locations.

  • Detect and correct unsafe working conditions and practices in order to prevent accidents or injuries to employees or others
