Industrial Hygiene Manager (Asbestos, IAQ, Lead, Mold) – Ohio

A Building Sciences Manager is responsible for project management and various aspects of fieldwork related to the Building Sciences service area, which includes services related to asbestos, lead, mold, radon, indoor air quality (IAQ), and industrial hygiene. Work is performed with direction from senior-level personnel; under the general supervision of the service area Principal.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conduct asbestos-related work activities, including inspection and bulk sample collection, abatement oversight, air monitoring, and air clearance sampling.
  • Conduct lead-based paint-related work activities, including inspections/risk assessments and sampling, abatement oversight, dust wipe/air clearance sampling, and report writing.
  • Conduct IAQ and mold-related work activities, including initial inspection and investigations, environmental sampling, remediation oversight, and pre/post-remediation air clearance sampling.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene investigations and monitoring events to evaluate worker exposures to potential workplace containments or hazards. Work activities include sample calibration, setup of air monitoring equipment, and observation and documentation of employee work practices and procedures.
  • Understand, participate, and fully engage in August Mack’s safety program, training, and policies.
  • Train and mentor field personnel in all field tasks necessary to complete a project’s scope of work.
  • Manage all aspects of projects, including budgeting and estimating, scheduling, project administration and setup, field activities, data interpretation, and client interaction. Maintain project momentum.
  • Identify changes to the project scope of work, communicate findings and project impacts with the client, and execute change orders (if necessary).
  • Perform regulatory and technical research as needed to support a project.
  • Evaluate, select and vet, schedule, and manage subcontractors.
  • Responsible for client communication on all projects, including closing the sale, explaining the scope and cost for the project, presenting the project schedule, informing the client of possible issues, and explaining change orders.
  • When applicable, prepare a Health and Safety Plan (HASP) or Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and review and enforce plans and site safety with all persons at the work site.
  • Document all field activities being performed in a field log, including reporting on field techniques, locations of the work, and any relevant field observations.
  • Prepare and write the final report for senior review, including field techniques, location(s), relevant field observations, data interpretation, and conclusions and recommendations.
  • Maintain information regarding relevant project experience and prepare job descriptions to update August Mack’s resume for marketing purposes.
  • Research and report as a subject matter expert (SME) supporting litigation matters.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:      

The position requires 3+ years of experience in Building Sciences-related consulting and (1) a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, environmental health science, chemistry, or (2) a high school diploma or equivalency and significant relevant experience in the industry. Strong computer and verbal/written communication skills are a must. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Prior environmental licensing or certifications such as Asbestos Building Inspector; Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor; Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, & Restoration Certification (IICRC) Mold Remediation or Water Restoration Certifications; or Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 40 hours Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification (40 hours) or General Industry 10 or 30 Hour Certifications are a plus.

The employee will receive all relevant training and certifications to obtain and maintain all applicable state licenses and certifications (i.e., asbestos, lead, radon, etc.).

Additional Requirements:

This classification requires using a company or personal vehicle on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and receive a medical clearance from a baseline physical.

This classification requires travel to various client locations. Travel typically involves one to two-day trips within the state or neighboring states, resulting in longer work days, and may include extended or further travel, resulting in multiple days and overnights. Long-distance drives and air travel may be required.

This classification has the potential for fluctuating weekend and night work shifts.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

Knowledge of:

  • Building construction and materials.
  • Asbestos, mold, radon, lead, indoor air quality, and industrial hygiene.
  • Hazards inherent to the environmental work and related safety measures.

Skill in:

  • Calibrating and using various types of field equipment.
  • Performing mathematical calculations.

Ability to:

  • Learn job-related material primarily through verbal instruction, training, reading, researching, and observation in an on-the-job setting.
  • Document and organize while working on multiple projects.
  • Accurately measure and document quantities of materials onsite using a tape measure or other measuring device.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in various environments (commercial, residential, and industrial settings) and weather conditions.
  • Work in small, cramped areas (confined spaces).
  • Climb ladders or stairs where equipment or sampling collection is required.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
  • Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to adjust equipment or collect samples.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Work closely to support others in a team environment.
