Hazardous waste labels must include the following information:

• Hazardous waste warning: The words “Hazardous Waste” must be clearly displayed on the container
• Waste composition: The physical state and composition of the waste must be included
• Hazardous properties: A statement that highlights the waste’s hazardous properties, such as if it’s flammable or reactive
• Generator information: The name and address of the generator must be included
• Accumulation date: The date the waste accumulation began must be included
• Manifest document number: If the waste is intended for off-site shipment, the manifest document number must be included.

The label must be placed in a visible location on the container, and it should not be covered by other markings. If multiple labels are required, the DOT recommends leaving a 6-inch space between them. The primary hazard label should be placed above and to the left of the secondary hazard label.

Labels should be inspected regularly to ensure they are legible, in good condition, and include all required information. Old labels should be removed or painted over if the container is reused.
