History

August Mack Environmental, Inc. was founded in 1988 by Geoffrey A. Glanders and Bryan K. Petriko. At the time of the company’s founding, the owners knew they wanted to create a different kind of environmental consulting firm. They were young, optimistic consultants with big ideas, supported by a group of individuals that provided an enormous amount of hard work, support, and guidance to help them achieve this goal. They desired to combine abilities of geologists with talents of engineers to develop a full-service organization that could provide superior, cost-effective, client-focused solutions to environmental problems. Given their background in geology and engineering, they were able to take initiative to change the philosophy of consulting by providing turnkey investigation, design, and construction services for remediation projects customized to client needs. This approach helped the company experience impressive growth and develop client relationships spanning more than 30 years.

Another goal Glanders and Petriko had when they started the company was to develop an employee-focused culture that would promote growth from within. To continue growth the company experienced from providing clients innovative solutions to handling environmental problems, the company decided to expand its geographic reach and service area offerings. In 1992, the company opened its first satellite office by relocating one of its Indianapolis employees to Ohio, to better meet client needs. In addition to expanding geographically for employee development, August Mack also expanded service areas to ensure the company did not become solely dependent on any one aspect of environmental consulting. In the 1980s, the company’s primary service area was Underground Storage Tank (UST) management, along with soil and groundwater remediation until the mid-1990s, when expanding regulatory compliance to become more focused on permitting and reporting following implementation of the Clean Air Act Amendments, in addition to the direct needs of some industrial clients.

This department expansion allowed August Mack to relocate existing staff to open a new office in Baltimore (later relocated to Lancaster, Pennsylvania) to better service an existing client. Then, in 1999, August Mack developed eCAP®, the comprehensive environmental health and safety (EH&S) program, which allowed the company to team up with new clients by taking full responsibility for their EH&S compliance programs. Expansion continued the following year, with launch of a new office in Lansing, Michigan, enabling August Mack to nearly double the size of its workforce by 2013. The year would also mark expansion in Ohio, from Dublin to a larger facility in Lewis Center. The company extended drilling services into the Ohio market and eventually opened an additional drilling office near Huntsville, Alabama in 2014 to support this growing service area.  Expansion in the Ohio market continued in 2015 with additional resources dedicated to serve due diligence and property transaction needs of clients in the Cleveland area. 2018 marked 30 years of EH&S service experience for August Mack, with nine offices across seven states, 1,150 clients serviced from 2015 to 2017, and more than 165 total employees to show for it.
